Workshop and Demonstrators Commissions
Plus is seeking to invite artists, makers or crafts people to demonstrate techniques or run workshops that involve words and letterforms.
THEME
The theme of the 2008 Festival is Hybrid and work is sought around this topic. Hybrid, has been chosen as the focus of this year’s event as it not only aptly describes Britain today but it also expresses the current state of graphic communications. Britain is a hybrid community that absorbs, transforms and transmits myriad influences from around the world to create something new and exciting, but is still recognizably British. Graphic and typographic design are also fusion disciplines that amalgamate graphic languages from around the world and from across the creative disciplines – often with surprising results. The 2008 Festival seeks to expose the hybrid in design.
WHO CAN APPLY?
Workshops/demonstrations are sought from across the creative and craft-based industries. Applications are welcomed from individuals, institutions and co-operatives; collaborative work between designers, artists and craftspeople is encouraged.
THE AWARD
The successful applicants will each receive £100.00 towards the running a half-day workshop/demonstration at the Plus International Design Festival, Birmingham, 5-8 November 2007.
SUBMISSION PROCESS
An outline proposal of not more than 500 words and an abbreviated CV in Word format and up to 5 low-resolution jpg images (where appropriate) to be sent to:

Plus is a beneficiary of the Arts Council Grants for the Arts and as a result has a number of small bursaries it will award to 5 artists, makers or crafts people to exhibit their work at the Festival.

Plus in Hello Digital
Plus is exhibiting at the Hello Digital Festival in Birmingham 23-26 October 2008. We will be installing a great big interactive Field of Light in the atrium of Millennium Point. For more information take a look at the Hello Digital blog - the Field of Light website will be ready soon.

Type Tarts
UKType will be at Plus having a bit of saucy typographic fun and helping to raise some money for St Bride in the process. UKType are inviting designers and typographers from around the world to create a type tart card: the results of which will be exhibited in Birmingham and London and then placed for auction: proceeds will all be donated to St Bride. MarieJoe Raidy Douaihy
Mariejoe Raidy Douaihy. Creative Director from the Raidy Printing Group in the Lebanon will be speaking at Plus this November. Mariejoe will be talking about the role of leadership in the printing industry. In the fast changing world of printing and technology, where typography, design and printing come into one, where the creative is combined with the technical and concepts mingle with reality constraints, the role of leadership and consultancy play are vital for a quality end product.
